Building on 50 Years of Scientific Accomplishments in Menlo Park
Since its establishment in 1954, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) facilities in the Menlo Park area of California have been home to numerous scientists and research teams whose work has done much to advance the understanding of the Earth. Their findings have helped to find valuable mineral and energy resources, solve vexing environmental problems, and make society safer from natural hazards. USGS staff at the Pacific Science Center or Western Region Center, as it has variously been called, have also made great efforts to bring the excitement and understanding of science to decisionmakers and the public, so that they can better appreciate the Earth we live on and make more informed decisions about land use and natural hazards.
Below are brief accounts of just some of the accomplishments, in science and in serving society, that were done by staff based in these USGS facilities.
