Celebrating the 125th Anniversary of the USGS and the 50th Anniversary of the USGS in Menlo Park, the USGS hosted a Wine & Cheese social to honor employees, former employees, and retirees. The Wine & Cheese began with the special music performance by the USGS band, "Duckweed" and a special book signing of David Howell's newly released book "The Winemaker's Dance--Connecting Geology and Wine in Napa Valley." David Howell, USGS Geologist Emeritus, will be presenting an evening public lecture on September 30, see special events calendar or PDF flyer. David Perlman, recipient of the 2004 John Wesley Powell award was recognized and honored at the Wine & Cheese social event in Menlo Park. David Perlman, senior writer and editor for the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper will officially be presented the award on October 19, at the honor awards ceremony at USGS headquarters in Reston, Virginia. For more information see the press release. Employees received a commemorative wine glass and an opportunity to taste fine wines [and beers] made by USGS employees and friends. The Wine & Cheese social was a huge success and was attended by more than 290 employees, former employees, retirees, and spouses. Many thanks to our vintners and brewers: All profits went to GeoKids, our on-site cooperative daycare center. The event was brought to you by the Menlo Park/50 working group, GeoKids, and the "Ghost" of GEM (Geological Employees of Menlo). Wine & Cheese Social1.
