Government unit nearly finished

The U.S. Geological Survey headquarters building in Menlo Park’s Linfield Oaks is nearing completion. Howard Gallagher, geologist in charge, said today.

Gallagher and Col. E. L. Norberg, architect for the huge two-story structure, appeared at the city planning commission meeting Monday to ask for a minor revision in plans. Norberg wants to use some of the covered carports at the rear of the property for storage houses for rock specimens.

The commission took the request under advisement.

Gallagher reported that the building is scheduled for completion Oct. 15, but said there is no chance that it will be ready for use at that time. He does hope to have his employees in and operating before the end of November, he said.

Workmen are finishing the interior but still have all the landscaping work to do.

The Menlo Park office will be headquarters for the Pacific Coast states and an undetermined number of other western states. Gallaher said jurisdictional lines between this and the Denver, Colo., office haven’t been fixed.
