U.S. Geological Survey Leasing More Space

Cramped for space because of rapid growth, the U.S. Geological Survey’s Pacific Coast Center here has launched a major program of expansion-by-leasing.

The center has leased 15,000 square feet of floor space in the former Hiller Aircraft Corp. plant and is negotiating for about 40,000 square feet more at Hiller and elsewhere.

Meanwhile, center officials are hoping a $6 million expansion program will be included in the federal budget next fiscal year. The center now has about 200,000 square feet.

Impetus for the expansion was basing here of two major new research laboratories--studying earthquakes and marine geology.

Avery Rogers, management officer, said even if the proposed expansion is authorized next year, it would be four to five years before the facilities are built.

Staff of the center, whose activities range from mapping the moon to mapping the western United States, has increased about 100 to 900 during the past year, and more growth is expected this year.
