Marine Survey Unit Here The United States Geological Survey has gathered its various programs in marine geology and hydrology together and put them under one roof--in Menlo Park. The agency, through the General Services Administration, is seeking additional space in the former Hiller plant in Kavanaugh Industrial Park. The Marine section is currently operating from the Geological Surveys West Coast Center at 345 Middlefield Road. The principal activity of the marine geology and hydrology office is locating and evaluating likely underwater sites of mineral resources. The agency has particular interest in heavy metals, such as tin, silver, gold and tungsten. The office is responsible for exploring the entire continental shelf of the United States, which on the West Coast involves an area of over 25,000 square miles. Likely sites are referred to the Bureau of Mines for possible development. Menlo Park Recorder August 11, 1966 |
