Crowd Attraction

The roof and second-story floor of one wing of a new half-million-dollar U.S. Geological Survey building are being raised by hydraulic jacks at Linfield Oaks, Menlo Park. This "lift-slab construction is relatively rare in the area, and construction of the 450,000-square-foot structure has been attracting large crowds of spectators. Each of the eight jacks is capable of lifting up to 50 tons of the prestressed concrete slabs, and these jacks are working at close to their 400-ton combined capacity, according to Architect Eugene Angell of Akol, Angell and Apaydin. Contractor J. Cyril Johnson is shooting for a Nov. 1 completion date. The building will house offices and laboratories of the Survey's West Coast center.
